Discuss the original Genesis Sonic games, and which ones are your favorite?

Mine is without a doubt Sonic 3 and Knuckles. You get to play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles through Sonic 3 AND Sonic and Knuckles. It's pretty much 2 games in 1. It has the biggest stages and the most secret areas making for a lot of exploration and you can also collect Chaos Emeralds (to earn Super Sonic and Super Knuckles) and then collect Super Emerald to earn Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles and Super Tails. For me, this game is easily the best. Because there's so much to do, it has the highest amount of replay value. So what are YOUR favorite Sonic Genesis games?

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) nothing can beat the original.

I would have to say Sonic 2. I completely agree with you about Sonic 3 and Knuckles though, and I've probably played that one the most. I think the levels are a little bit more memorable in Sonic 2, for me at least. Plus, it introduced Tails, who I'll admit is my favorite character.

I would say Sonic 3 but... it's because it's the only one I played.. Embarassed I'm such a bad guy.

Sonic 2 for me. Love the music and the areas.

I felt that all the other Sonic games changed the formula up too much by adding a bunch of complexity to the levels. I liked just blazing through the levels more than having to stop and go all the time to try and find a bunch of hidden things and explore multiple paths. Not that adding depth to level design is a bad thing, but all the Sonic games past 2 just felt weird to me.

    Where's Sonic CD?

That's far and away my favorite of the 2D Sonic games.

sonic 3 and knuckles for me. I just love that to death. I wish the hyper forms would come back.
oh funny thing! When I was a kid, I actually called it sonic and knuckles 3 . And I called sonic 2 and knuckles, sonic and knuckles 2.

I agree for the most part. Sonic 2 is a gem, that's for sure. The game had the speed and simplicity that makes a Sonic game fun to pick up and play, but it also featured plenty of hidden goodies for those willing to slow down and explore the stages.

Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are much more deliberate games and speed seems to be much less the focus. That'd be fine if it weren't for the fact that Sonic is pretty damn floaty and clumsy when not blazing through levels. Marble Garden Zone and Carnival Night Zone are total chores to play and seem to drag on forever, while every zone in Sonic 2 was a blast to play through.

I like them, don't get me wrong, but when it comes to Sonic's original games Sonic 2 is still king to me.

I'm well aware of that, but there doesn't appear to be a Sega CD section yet and since you included Knuckles Chaotix, which was on the Sega 32X, I figured you might want to include the Sega CD game since they were both for Genesis add-ons.

Hmm that's true and you have a point. But Sadly I can't add Sonic CD now, unless Keith Apicary wants to add it =/.

I included Knuckles Chaotix because the 32X was a SEGA Genesis attachment, so it's still pretty much a SEGA Genesis game system but with enhanced graphics

Ah, well if you can't add it then don't worry about it. It just seemed like a missing piece to me since it was one of the 2D Sonic Team games and the rest of them were on the list. Plus, it really is my favorite of them. I liked that you could choose to either explore the levels/travel through time, or just go as fast as you could. If it's off the table, then my vote goes to Sonic 2. It's the one I keep coming back to whenever I don't feel like Sonic CD.

I've heard from a lot of people that Sonic CD is pretty amazing, but sadly I never owned a Sega CD, and have never been able to play it.

Sonic CD was like the supreme remastered edition of Sonic 1 in my honest opinion. Minor gameplay changes with the same feel. Yet the music, Anime cutscenes, and level design made the difference.

I really like Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Just something about it. I really like the level designs and the "feel" of everything.

Do you have a GameCube or Wii? You could always try it out on Soinc Gems Collection =] It's probably VERY cheap by now since it's for GameCube

Is that on the Sonic Gems Collection? I own a Gamecube and a Wii, so I'm definitely going to see if I can find a copy. Thanks Mykle!

Np! and yes, Sonic Gems Collection has Soinc CD, Soinc R, Sonic the Fighters and Vector Man 1 and Vector Man 2 and a bunch of game gear games (really the only good game gear game on there is Tails Adventures)

Woah, I didn't realize the Sonic Gems Collection had that much content going for it. I might have to pick that up at some point. Always wanted to try Sonic the Fighters.

I'm pretty certain the only game gear Sonic game I don't physically own is Tails Adventures, which I've never played. I'm going to see if I can find this today!

I'd have said Knuckle's Chaotix but I don't really think of that one as a sonic game... No bloody sonic!

I really love the mechanics in that one Smile I actually voted for Sonic 3 and knuckles, love the variety of gameplay with the different characters.
